THANKAS FROM NEPAL
Thanka paintings often depict the life of the Buddha, Buddha's teachings, Lamas or Deities, including Bodhisattvas (enlightened beings or deities of infinite compassion), and oftentimes include a Mandala (a mystic painting set in a round geometric design). They are traditionally painted on a treated cotton cloth, use natural colors, are mounted with a textile backing, and a silk cover on the front.
In Nepal, 24 carat gold is plated over some parts of the Thanka or gold leaf is formed into beads and Thankas must be kept in dry places where moisture will not affect the quality of the silk.
The composition of a Thanka, as with most Buddhist art, is highly geometric, of elaborate composition and oftentimes a central deity is symmetrically surrounded by other figures.
These figures are typically laid out on a grid of angles and intersecting lines. A skilled Thanka artist will generally select from a variety of predesigned items for their composition, ranging from alms bowls and animals, to the shape, size, and angle of a figure's eyes, nose, etc. The process is very methodical and requires a deep understanding of the symbolism involved in order to capture the spirit of the design.
Since the art is explicitly religious, all symbols are in accordance with Buddhist scripture and because they depict the physical body and qualities of the Buddha, perhaps in the form of a deity, objects must follow rules regarding proportions, shape, color, stance, hand positions, and attributes. Therefore, the artist must also be properly trained with sufficient religious knowledge to create an accurate and appropriate painting.
Tibetan and Chinese influence is evident in Nepalese Thanka paintings. The Tibetan masters refined their art by studying traditions of different countries. A painting's lining and measurement, costumes, implementations and ornaments are mostly based on Indian styles.
The drawing of figures is based on Nepalese style and the background sceneries are based on Chinese style. Thus, the Thanka painting has become a unique and distinctive creation of beauty and fine art.
